About Karnataka Philatelic Society
Philately has been active in Karnataka since the 1960's. Numerous associations viz. Stamp Wing of the Indo-American Association, Davangere Philatelic Club, Youth Philatelics, Hassan Philatelic Club, Shimoga Philatelic Club, Malnad Philatelic Club, Belgaum Philatelic Club, Hubli Philatelic Club, Youth Philatelic Club- Mysore, Dakshin Kannada Philatelic & Numismatic Association and Mysore Philatelists were established. Only a few associations are active today.
INDIPEX-73, the National Philatelic Exhibition provided the impetus for the establishment of numerous philatelic associations in the country. During KARNAPEX 75, 1st State Philatelic Exhibition, Sri. M R. Krishnan, the then Post Master General, Karnataka Circle suggested to the philatelists of Karnataka to form an apex body to co-ordinate the philatelic activities in Karnataka. Thus was born, KARNATAKA PHILATELIC SOCIETY (KPS), on 9th March 1975. In the beginning, a few of the philatelic societies in the state got affiliated with KPS, but this trend was not followed.
KPS played a vital role in the successful conduct of ASIANA77, the first Asian Philatelic Exhibition held in Bangalore. With rate and unique exhibits coming from all corners of the Asian continent, this exhibits is still rated as the best-organized exhibition in Southern India.
The late Col. L. G. Shenoi was the founder President of KPS. Other Presidents include Mr. Y. R. Shah, Dr. (Mrs). Sita Bhateja, Mr. A. N. Kagal, Dr. Sangoram, Dr. P N Dixit, Mr. Mahesh Jambulingam.
The society, without fail, meets every 1st Sunday at the General Post Office, Bengaluru. Out healthy membership strength provides healthy interactions during the meetings and each one, young and old, gains from being a member of the society. Philatelists, collecting almost all topics imaginable, form the nucleus of KPS. Members participate in all levels of exhibitions from the district level to International levels.
KPS is active in promoting philately in schools. KPS also, in association with the Department of Posts, conducts workshops, seminars on philately, especially, during exhibitions. KPS has been instrumental in using the media, through an innovative programme “Newspaper in Education (NIE), by conducting classes in philately in schools supporting this programme.
While the main focus of attention of the society shall be the Karnataka State, the Society may extend its operation to any area outside the state.
Aims and Objectives
The aims and objectives of the society are as under:
- To popularize, promote and serve the hobby of philately in all its aspects, with emphasis on its value as instrument for developing national consciousness, pride and integration, and international understanding and good will.
- Toward the achievement of these objectives, to organize philatelic associations, hold or help hold exhibitions and displays, arrange meeting and seminars, set up libraries and museums, undertake and/or assist in publication of books and journals, promote exchanges and auctions and undertake any other programmes necessary for achieving above objectives.
- To purchase, take on lease or in exchange, rent or otherwise any land or property which will be deemed necessary or convenient for fulfilling the objectives of the society.
